   James about his character
Rising star D'Arcy says he found little in common with the character of Nicholas who, at times, appears very gullible. He says: I'm about the same age as Nicholas and single - and that's all. He's a bit lost in the world and needs a bit of guidance, because he's searching for a mother figure. I like his innocence but he does take people at face value, which can be foolish.

THE TRENCH

    Colin Daventry   supporting role
The film tells the story of a group of young British soldiers on the eve of the Battle of the Somme in the summer of 1916, the worst defeat in British military history. Against this ill-fated backdrop, the movie depicts the soldiers' experience as a mixture of boredom, fear, and restlessness, confined to a trench on the front lines.
James about his character:
“I’m playing the character of Daventry, who is the slightly cynical member of the group. He’s the only character really, with perhaps the exception of the officers, who understands that the chances are ‘we are all going to die’ where everybody else is very exited over the prospect of going over the top and killing “Jerrys” or whatever. I think Daventry is the one guy who sort of  understands that the bombardment isn’t working and the wires haven’t been cut and the chances are they are all going to die.”

REBEL HEART
TV mini-series, 4 parts,    prem. Jan. 01,        196 min,      VHS only!
Nymphe D’Or for best director at the Monte Carlo TV Festival (February 2001).

   Ernie Coyne   leading role
Rebel Heart is a story of passion and patriotism. It tells of one young man's coming of age during the tumultuous years from 1916-1922 in Ireland. Ernie Coyne (James D'Arcy) is an idealistic 18-year-old who signs up to fight for an independent Ireland in the doomed Easter Rising but who ultimately finds his loyalties divided between the man he believes in and Ita, the woman he loves.
official site: http://www.picturepalace.com/ourproductions/rebelheart/
James about his role
Now here I am playing a passionate young Irishman who would die for what he believes in. Ernie Coyne goes on an amazing journey from boy, to ruthless republican, to responsible adult.
There is an odd sense of responsibility attached to appearing in a drama about a real piece of history. A work of fiction is fun.
I find it incredibly romantic that people should fight for a cause they believe in and be prepared to die for it.

Ch. Marlowe, EDWARD II - Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, March 2001

   Gaveston   big supporting role
The 12 Ian Charleson Award 2002- The third prize went to James D'Arcy, who, as Gaveston  "overcame the difficulty of making him too louche or wicked, to create a character that gave the play a balance".

Director M. Grandage: At the centre of the piece is a blatant homosexual love affair between two men (Edward II and his favorite, Piers Gaveston) that is the catalyst for a great political play. [Edward] invites Gaveston to share in his public duties, ‘...share the kingdom with thy dearest friend’ as if he was able to allocate joint ownership of the title as he so wished, showing a complete abuse of power. In giving Gaveston positions of public office, as the barons point out he is undermining the hereditary concept of government. By shifting the power in this way he brings about a state of civil war.

THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY
TV mini-series, 2 parts,    prem. March 01,   194 min,   DVD
RTS Television Award 2001, BAFTA TV Award 2002,
Based on a novel by Charles Dickens, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

   Nicholas Nickleby   title role
Tselmende: In this adaption of Charles Dickens' novel, we meet Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who has just lost his father.  His cruel uncle takes an immediate dislike to him, and is unwilling to do more than the bare minimum for Nicholas and his family, getting Nicholas a job at a "boarding school" that is little more than a home for unwanted boys.  The Squeers, he soon discovers, are much more interested in fleecing the boy's families than providing an education, and he finds himself disgusted by their behavoir, especially how they act towards Smike.  The two become fast friends and companions as they search for a way to find their fortunes.  The movie is divided somewhat evenly between Nicholas and his sister, Kate.  Kate is well liked by her uncle, though it does little to help her or her mother. Basically, Nicholas is an earnest, naive, honorable young man who wants to do the right thing.  He tries to earn money to help his family, he tries to help Smike, he hides his love for Madeline Bray because he fears that it will seem as if he is taking advantage of the trust of his employers.

REVELATION
prem. Sitges-Catalonian IF Festival Oct.2001,    115 min         DVD

   Jake Martel   main character
A relic has been fought over by the forces of light and darkness for two thousand years. Missing for centuries, the sacred artefact turns up in the back of a camper van in 2001. A powerful secret society is slaughtering innocents to get hold of it. Billionaire mogul Magnus Martel is desperate to find and destroy the relic, reluctantly aided by his estranged son Jake (JAMES D’ARCY), a computer decoding expert, and Mira, a student of alchemy. The hunt takes the protagonists from Britain to France, Malta and Greece. Their dangerous journey also becomes a voyage of self-discovery and personal fulfilment.
More on the official site: http://www.revelation-movie.com/
      James about his character:
Jake is a troubled young man, messed up emotionally and completely unsure of his next move in life. When his estranged father needs help in breaking these ancient codes, he does it mainly because the subject links in with something Jake has a clear affinity for. He certainly isn't motivated by any misguided parental feelings. Then he's drawn in further by something he doesn't fully understand and, as the story unfolds, we realise why he hasn't understood the bigger implications. When he first meets Mira, Jake isn't sure if he can trust her or if he even likes her. But he's inexorably drawn to her too for other strange reasons so Jake embarks on a richly rewarding personal quest that has been exciting to play. Jake is the eyes of the audience and he asks the questions they want to know because the character doesn't understand alchemy, the occult or the Knights Templar either

2003

DOT THE I
premiere Sundance FF Jan. 03, 90 min,     DVD
Audience Award- Deauville Film Festival 2003

Barnaby Caspian   one of the three main characters
Dot the I is about a love triangle between Barnaby, his fiancé Carmen and a stranger named Kit who Carmen meets on the eve of her wedding night. The story isn’t plain and simple, though, with numerous twists and turns to keep the audience guessing.
James D'Arcy: I heard somebody describe it as an urban love triangle which seems about fair on one level. But for me the appeal is that it keeps you on your toes. You never quite know what's going to happen next. In fact, better than that, you make certain assumptions about what will happen next and the film keeps twisting them on its head… Although it is slick, it is very different to most Hollywood blockbusters as this is a film that's very definitely about characters, relationships and emotion.
   James about his character
The fun was that I got to explore both sides of my character and it was a challenge finding little subtleties and playing with them. I guess my job was really to try and meld all the aspects together and make one credible person. To an extent, though, we all do that in everyday life, depending on the company we're in - guys behave in a different way with their girlfriends to the way they do with their mates - so it's not completely outside of my frame of reference!

MASTER AND COMMANDER. THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

   Tom Pullings   supporting role

Surprise around Cape Horn to the far reaches of the Pacific.
official site: http://www.foxhome.com/masterandcommander/main.html
James about his character
Although Pullings, in the books, is ‘not a gentleman’ (referring to his birth rather than his manners) he is, says D’Arcy, A really nice guy. And he is really well-respected. Not complicated. You know”, he adds, “my view is that they weren’t complicated men. They didn’t have enough time to think about themselves. You’re a bit disjointed from your life, which uncomplicates things very quickly. We all have friends, relationships, bank statements and so on to go back to – but not here. It’s exactly like going out to sea for six months.

Jim Caddon   one of the main characters
The story of a group of POWs in Stalag 39, a Prisoner Of War Camp during the Second World War.
James about his role:
I’d love to think if it was me, I’d be courageous like Jim and try to escape. I do wonder if in the actual circumstances I’d think “Bloody hell, I have to escape”, or whether I’d sit quietly and just see it out. I have visions of myself being incredibly brave, though.

prem. Aug. 04, 114 min,      DVD

   Father Francis   supporting role
Having abandoned his faith in God, Father Merrin joins a British archaeological excavation in Kenya, where an inexplicably pristine Christian Byzantine church has been unearthed - looking as if it had been buried on the day it was completed. But beneath the church, something much older sleeps, waiting to be awoken. In the place where Evil was born, Merrin will finally see its true face.
official site: http://exorcistthebeginning.warnerbros.com/exorcist_flashindex.htm
   James about his character
Father Francis has been studying at the Vatican. Upon discovery of the church, the Vatican orders him to change course to Kenya. He is charged with making sure that the religious aspects of the excavation are given the proper consideration and respect, and when he hears that Father Merrin is joining the dig, he believes they will have a common purpose. Father Merrin is in a pretty bad place in his life. He’s rejected God and as the film progresses Francis is trying constantly to persuade him to re-discover his faith and to help as things become progressively stranger and stranger and more sinister. And Francis has to help him, persuade him that falling from God was the wrong thing for him to have done.

AN AMERICAN HAUNTING
premiere AFI FF Nov.05, 91 min   DVD
Based on a novel: Brent Monahan, The Bell Witch: An American Haunting

Richard Powell   one of the main characters
The film is based on the story of the Bell Witch, a famous case of alleged supernatural events that plagued the John Bell family in Tennessee in the early 1800s. [James] plays Richard Powell, the schoolteacher who at first tries to convince John and Lucy Bell and their daughter, Betsy, of a real-world explanation for the oddities plaguing the family, in particular Betsy.
official website (fr)  http://www.americanhaunting-lefilm.com/
James about his character
I play a character called Richard Powell, a schoolteacher in this small village in 1816, Tennessee. He is more educated than perhaps the majority of this farming community; he seems to fit rather well and is someone who people look up to. What I really like about Richard Powell is that he is kind of double edged. He has something that is interesting for an actor to play truthfully but at the same time to give the impression of something else. It is a challenge, a very exciting role to do.
The biggest change between reading the script and now shooting it is, I realized, he looks a lot more like me than I thought.

THE MOVING FINGER (MARPLE)
TV series, s.2, ep.2, prem. Febr.06, 93 min     DVD

The sleepy village of Lymstock seems the perfect place for Jerry Burton to recuperate from his accident under the care of his sister, Joanna. But soon a series of vicious poison-pen letters destroys the village's quiet charm, eventually causing one recipient to commit suicide..
James about his role
Jerry Burton is a World War II veteran. When we meet him at the beginning of the story he is at the end of his rope, basically. He tries to commit suicide. His doctor prescribes the quiet life, so his sister takes him off to the countryside to do nothing at all. Of course, this is the world of Miss Marple, so lots and lots starts to happen! Gradually, through that process and a girl he meets, he begins to revitalize himself. I think Jerry is in a field of one in that he is, in my experience, the one person in a Marple -- who isn't Miss Marple herself -- who isn't a suspect. I suppose in a way in this story he is like 'Mr. Marple!

MANSFIELD PARK
TV film, prem. March 07        DVD
Based on Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park

   Tom Bertram   supporting role
Tselmende: Based on the novel by Jane Austin, Mansfield Park is the story of Fanny Price.  Orphaned at a young age, she is sent to live with her Uncle and cousins, the Bertram family.  She has always loved the youngest son, Edmund, but as the years pass it seems as if he will never return her affections.  James plays the eldest son, Tom, who spends his days drinking and betting on horse races.  He is, oddly, the first male of the family to actually say that he sees the value in Fanny, calling her the best of all women. (At least in the movie.)  Even though he's not in the movie a great deal, he manages to take a heartily unlovable character and infuse him with color, humor and kindness.

official site: http://sonypictures.com/movies/rise/
     James about the film
I think it's a film noir that lives in this strange heightened reality. I hesitate to say that it's a horror film or a vampire film because I don't think it does justice what Sebastian has written. There's a much stronger undercurrent than those terms would suggest passing through the film. I'm hoping we're making something that is very emotional and very real.

SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL
Tv series, s.3, prem. Jan. 2010   20 min    DVD March 2010
Based on The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl by Belle de Jour

   Duncan    supporting role
Based on the best-selling, real life diaries of an upmarket escort, Secret Diary of a Call Girl allows us a deeper look into the world of the glamorous and intelligent Belle. Belle is now juggling being Hannah, a high-class independent escort and a published author. It’s a constant struggle to keep her numerous identities hidden, a struggle which becomes harder when her sister Jackie comes to stay. There is only one man who understands her – Duncan, the editor of her book. Is this a man who can accept Belle for what she is?
James about his character: At the beginning, you’re supposed to like him. He’s an intelligent, liberal man who’s totally at ease with Belle’s profession. […] He sees her simply as a person and isn’t the least bit judgemental about her lifestyle. For the sake of the book, Duncan encourages Belle to go further in her work and really explore the limits of it. […] When she starts to do lots of more extreme things, that turns him on. Belle begins to get into his soul. […]Secret Diary of a Call Girl has struck a chord because it reminds us that we’re all sexual beings. That’s not something that’s very often discussed on TV. Before they have watched it, people might assume that it’s just titillating fodder, but in fact there is far more to it than that. It’s not Ken Loach, but it’s a half-hour comedy drama which in a gentle way opens up themes that are really worth debating.

Thanks girls

Perhaps somebody would volounteer to write a short synopsis of Mansfield Park? It seems so easy and so obvious that it's almost too difficult for me.  Sad

Based on the novel by Jane Austin, Mansfield Park is the story of Franny Price. He is, oddly, the first male of the family to actually say that he sees the value in Franny, calling her the best of all women. (At least in the movie.)  Even though he's not in the movie a great deal, he manages to take a heartily unlovable character and infuse him with color, humor and kindness.

(Does that help?)

Ania - this is so cute, and it is such fun to revisit choice comments on the differnet D'Arcy characters.  It's almost like a greatest hits page.
Thanks!

(sorry it's taken so long.  I've been stressed out, not able to think.)

Let's see.

In this adaption of Charles Dickinson's novel, we meet Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who has just lost his father.

Basically, Nicholas is an earnest, niave, honorable young man who wants to do the right thing.  He tries to earn money to help his family, he tries to help Smike, he hides his love for Madeline Bray because he fears that it will seem as if he is taking advantage of the trust of his employers.  This is a favorite film for James fans, not only because he's in it a lot, but because he plays the role so wonderfully.

Thanks a lot, Tselmende! It wasn't too long. Now is the first part almost ready - save two pictures I must find comments for - Silent Witness and Guest House I think.
I added Bonekickers to the filmography - what a pleasure to add something new  Grin
