Derek Kettering is Ruth’s husband. But being the bankrupt son of the gentry, he is a British aristocrat who is poor but well-titled. Derek is a devilishly attractive scoundrel with terrible luck at cards, but there is something innocent and romantic in the way he still loves his wife that you can’t help but still like him.
Plot: Hercule Poirot is escaping London, and more particularly, the hell that is his hotel home while his flat is being decorated. Travelling on the glamorous Blue Train, the French Riviera beckons for the detective and his newest acquaintance, the quietly demure Katherine Gray, now unexpectedly wealthy thanks to the will of the cantankerous old lady for whom she was a loyal companion. Poirot is floored by her beauty at the Park Lane hotel, where he has also met the American oil magnate Rufus Van Aldin and his daughter Ruth, on whom Rufus has lavished the famous ruby, the Heart of Fire. Ruth, encouraged by her father, is on the point of divorcing her wastrel husband Derek Kettering, and is already in thrall to her new lover, the Comte de le Roche. The three of them are also bound for the Riviera, as are Katherine's impoverished cousin Lady Tamplin, her toy-boy fourth husband, Corky, and her daughter, Lenox. As the magnificent express prepares to leave Calais, its valves hissing and boiler rumbling, Poirot assures Katherine: "I do not think we shall be bored."

Quotes from the film:
Derek Kettering (to Ruth): I've never thought of you as a cow. Perhaps as a horse - in the betting sense.
La Roche: You're drunk.
Derek Kettering: My dear count, to sit gazing at you for any length of time, drunkenness is absolutely mandatory.
Trevor Hopkins (Producer): The Blue Train is a very glamorous vehicle, like the Concord of its time taking the jet set from London to the south of France.
There's no denying that the cast is uniformly excellent. I think that the most impressive performances are that of Georgina Rylance as Katherine Grey and James D'Arcy as Derek Kettering (and of course David Suchet) --- tv.com reviews
The exquisitely handsome and exceptionally talented James D’Arcy who is perfectly cast as the devilishly attractive Derek Kettering… --- dougpayne.blogspot.com
